Phrase 1 is a 4 bar T&V phrase loosely based on Duane Allman’s solo. Notice how the figures (2 and 3 note groupings) primarily range between the 5 and the b7 (E and G) of the mode. Also, see how ascending and descending between them maintains musical logic and unity. Finally, the main idea of the variation is to increase phrase tension by intensifying the rhythm and adding a few new notes. This approach is somewhat typical of jazz and creates more tension than emphasizing the lower chord tones (A and C, the 1 and b3).
