Watch the Idlewild online guitar lesson by Joe Deloro from Blues Rock Road Trip 2
Idlewild takes its general direction from the Allman Brothers tune, In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed. Originally inspired by a headstone in a Macon, GA cemetery, the idea here is to get into some of the same jazzy minor Southern Rock vibe as the original by using the Dorian mode (1,2,b3,4,5,6,b7).
The backing chords are Am9 and D, the ii (pronounced, “2”) and V (‘5”) chords in A Dorian (2nd mode of G major). The lead scale for both phrases is also the A Dorian mode: A, B, C, D, E, F#, G, A (1,2,b3,4,5,6,b7,8). Don’t let these and the following comments make you think we’ve left the blues-rock zone; the Dorian modal tonality is a mainstay.
