Watch the Situations online guitar lesson by Joe Deloro from Blues Rock Road Trip 2
Situations is built from the Intro riff of Jeff Beck’s, Situation from his 1972 album, Rough And Ready. At that point in time the British blues rocker was just beginning to expand his musical horizons into heavy modal jazz and funky latin r&b sounds like this. That being said though, the core of his soloing was (as it is today) still founded on the blues.
The main point of this example is to demonstrate how to build unity within a motive by using sixteenth note syncopation with varied repetition. That is, keeping things interesting with good phrasing. In this case, figure variation and chord tone targeting are the keys. A full description is given below in the phrasing breakdown. The backing track chord progression here is based on ii7-V7 changes in G: Am7,D7,Am7,D.
