Watch the Ala Grange 2 online guitar lesson by Joe Deloro from Blues Rock Road Trip 2

Phrase 2 is also a 4 bar Q&A. This time though the motives are clearly separated every 2 bars. Tension is achieved another way this time. with pick-ups that “offset” each motive back to the upbeat of 3 instead of starting “square” on beat 1 as in Phrase 1. Also, the answer is voiced an octave above the question to add contrast between the motives.

Here, we dip into the A blues scale: A,C,D,Eb,E,G,A (1,b3,4,b5,5,b7,8) a bit, with the b5 in the opening pick-up and slide to bar 4. This lead is a Billy Gibbons/Duane Allman hybrid, with the second motive inspired by Allman’s slide style.
