Watch the Claves: Rhythm online guitar lesson by Joe Deloro from Blues Rock Road Trip
Out of Africa came the bo diddley (a one-stringed guitar) and the clave (cla-vay), the rocking rhythm that inspired the Chess Records #1 hit, Bo Diddley (1955) by the man with the same name. Many other great variations have followed including, Willie and The Hand Jive (Johnny Otis), Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly/The Rolling Stones) and Who Do You Love? (Ronnie Hawkins).
In the same spirit, this lesson features two more angles on the Clave. The first has a rhythm part based on hammering onto the open E and A chords, while the second slides into G, C, and Eb power chords. As far as the lead parts are concerned, the first expands on the signature Hand Jive lick, and the second takes a more melodic approach.
