The moving 4 note pattern has it's usage too. I use it a lot, and so do a lot of blues and rock players. It's a good way to be able to play longer runs in one position on the neck, since there are a lot of repeated notes. Too much of it makes it sound like an exercise of course, so use it wisely. Try this pattern with a variety of scales, to see what cool licks can be created from this one pattern.
