Watch the Swing It online guitar lesson by David Hamburger from Blues Alchemy

You can hear quite a bit of this comping style on organ combo records from the 1960s, when Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Jack McDuff and others led trios with guitar and drums, or quartets that added a tenor saxophone to the lineup. Guitarists Grant Green and Kenny Burrell in particular backed up these leaders with a punchy, stripped-down style that fit between and complemented the swirling sound of the Hammond's upper register and the fat sustain of its bass pedals.
