The warm-sounding thumb technique comes from the playing of jazz nonpareil Wes Montgomery, who played everything - single notes, octaves and chords - with this approach. Wes told Downbeat he started playing that way so his practicing wouldn't bug anybody. "The sound was too much even for my neighbors, so I took to the back room in the house and began plucking the strings with the fat part of my thumb. This was much quieter." Hmm. So if I quit practicing with my Twin on 10, I'll start sounding like a genius too? Tempting.
