B.B. King had had a stack of hits on the R&B charts in the 1950s and been touring for nearly two decades before the monster hit "The Thrill Is Gone" put him back on the air in 1971. In the meantime, his influence on guitar heroes like Eric Clapton and the efforts of promoters like Bill Graham to put King on the bill with the rock stars who worshipped him had already begun to lift him into that rarefied atmosphere where only first names are necessary: "Wes," "Jimi," "B.B."
