It's great to play interesting rhythm guitar, but if you get too wrapped up in playing cool rhythm stuff, it can start to sound like there are two solos going on at once - yours and that of the person you're supposed to be backing up. So pick a few simple ideas, try and be as much a part of the groove as the bass and drums, and experiment with making subtle shifts in your part from chorus to chorus, and everyone will come to dig you immensely.
