Watch the Memphis Soul online guitar lesson by David Hamburger from Blues Alchemy

When the guitar peeks through the mix of backup vocals, horns and keyboards on a 1960s R&B record, it's often with clear-toned, uncluttered double-stops, like Steve Cropper's licks on Otis Redding's "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" and "The Happy Song" or the intro to Sam and Dave's "Soul Man." Cropper was the house guitarist at the Stax label in the 1960s; in addition to co-writing many of Redding's hits, he was the guitarist on "Green Onions" and the rest of the Booker T. and the MGs catalog.
