Watch the Morganfield Variations online guitar lesson by David Hamburger from Blues Alchemy: Post-War

Muddy’s electric slide style was essentially (and literally) an amplification of the acoustic slide sound he developed before even moving to Chicago. Playing in a band allowed him to streamline and simplify his playing, letting go of the bass notes to focus on single-note lines while other musicians in the band provided the standard-tuning fretted guitar work. Low-end blues licks from those recordings show up decades later (and a lot faster) in Stevie Ray Vaughan’s revved-up open position workouts.
