Learning to improvise on trickier changes like these requires striking a delicate balance. Learning specific licks is a great way to see what actually works, but you'll have to take the time to dissect the licks yourself and see how the notes work against each chord to really get a grip on how to use them. Having said that, just learning the licks themselves can be a great mnemonic device - it’s a lot easier to remember one cool altered-tones lick than to memorize a two-octave scale with the same notes.
