Watch the The Genius online guitar lesson by David Hamburger from Blues Alchemy: Post-War
When I was in college, I picked up a copy of Ray Charles’ 1959 LP The Genius of Ray Charles, mostly because the band featured musicians from both the Count Basie and Duke Ellington bands. The second side turned out to be all string arrangements, which at the time I found to be corny in the extreme. A few years later however, I gave side 2 another listen and discovered, among other things, the impossibly hip “You Won’t Let Me Go”, strings and all. It’s a great example of an eight bar blues in this style.
