Successful bands create a template for those that follow. Nat “King” Cole’s pianoless trio, Muddy Waters’ classic 1950's lineup, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin - each came to represent the way to organize a band in a particular style. Jimmy Smith’s default group of organ, tenor saxophone, guitar, and drums was no exception. Within a year or two of his emergence on the scene with a slew of rapidly-released Blue Note albums, the “organ combo” had become almost a genre in its own right, with a set instrumentation and an expected repertoire of groove tunes, blues ballads, and the occasional standard.
