Watch the Sam I Am Solo online guitar lesson by David Hamburger from Blues Alchemy: Post-War

Lightnin’ Hopkins is one of the best examples of how blurry the line really can be between electric and acoustic blues styles. At the most extreme, it does seem pretty unfathomable to think of Blind Blake’s music on a Stratocaster, or B.B. King leading his band with a D-28. But Lightnin’ Hopkins really did play pretty much the same way no matter what instrument he was holding at the time, with or without a band behind him. Which seems to indicate, though it’s just a guess on my part, that for Hopkins electricity was more of a convenience than a gateway to new sonic possibilities.
