Watch the Little Sixteen Variations online guitar lesson by David Hamburger from Blues Alchemy: Post-War

In 1955, Little Walter recorded “My Babe”, a sixteen-bar blues based on the gospel tune “This Train,” a traditional song Sister Rosetta Tharpe had recorded in 1939 (If you don’t know Sister Tharpe’s work, go check it out - the way she sings “Nobody’s Fault But Mine” is, for lack of a better word, totally badass). On “My Babe”, Walter goes to a straight 12-bar form for his solo, but to keep things interesting, we’re soloing on the full sixteen-bar verse form to Walter’s hit.
