Watch the Rushmore Variations online guitar lesson by David Hamburger from Blues Alchemy: Post-War
Like most people, I learned to play open chords first, then bar chords and closed-position pentatonic scales. It was a long time before I discovered how cool it sounded to migrate those scales down towards the nut, where I could take advantage of additional hammer-on, pull-off, and double-stop moves. Try taking an open position chord voicing of the key you're playing in and work out where the notes of the blue scale from the same root fall, also in open position. You'll start finding all kinds of cool possibilities.
