Otis Rush is usually categorized as a “west side” Chicago bluesman, along with Buddy Guy and Magic Sam. Rush was already recording by the late 1950's, but he belongs to the generation after Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf that began bringing more contemporary influences into the Chicago sound. By the late ‘60s, with Junior Wells trying out funk grooves and Magic Sam bringing soul sounds into the blues, Otis Rush headed to Muscle Shoals to cut the Mike Bloomfield produced Mourning in the Morning, replete with horns, backup vocals, and a mix of blues and soul material.
