Watch the Gray Matter online guitar lesson by Anthony Stauffer from 50 Monster SRV Licks You Must Know
Stevie usually began his solos for this song in box 5, Which has a 'major' sound. He would counter this sound by shifting into box 1 for a more traditional minor pentatonic feel. That's what we're going to do in this lick. We're going to start in Box 5, transition into Box 1, then slide back down into Box 5 to finish it with some speed.
In this lick we're going to solo in two of the main soloing positions Stevie used in this song. The first has a more 'major' sound (I call it Box 5), the second is the main blues box (Box 1) that most people already know. They fit back-to-back on the fretboard, but most players never learn how to use Box 5 effectively. This lick provides an overview of how each position is best used, and how to blend their unique sounds.
