Watch the Side-Stepping online guitar lesson by Tom Wolfe from 50 Hard Bop Blues Licks You MUST Know

A common characteristic of Wes Montgomery's chord soloing was the use of side-stepping. This is simply playing a chord on one fret and usually moving it down a half-step (or one fret) and moving it back up to the original location. This creates a very basic tension and release and works even though the notes are all technically not in the harmonic progression. Try this basic lick and listen to the tension and resolution that occurs against the harmonic progression.
