Watch the Alternate Fingerings online guitar lesson by Tom Wolfe from 50 Hard Bop Blues Licks You MUST Know
In a previous lick, we learned about some articulations and how those can change a musical phrase from average, to very exciting. This phrase uses what horn players refer to as alternate fingerings. A horn can play the same pitch using different fingerings which in turn creates different timbral content. Guitarists can do the same thing. You will also note, that while this phrase has a blues quality, there are no blue notes. This is rooted in the bebop and swing tradition a la Wes Montgomery.
