Watch the Lightnin' Strikes online guitar lesson by Richard Van Bergen from 50 Down Home Blues Licks You MUST Know

This lick is in the style of one of the greatest bluesmen from Texas: Lightnin’ Hopkins. Hopkins was born in Houston and made his first recordings in 1947. Throughout his career Hopkins recorded solo and with a band. His style was loose and on the spot. He didn’t care too much about the 12 bar form. He changed chords whenever he felt like it. On his recordings with a band you can hear the trouble his fellow musicians had following him! Hopkins almost exclusively played in the key of E or A. This one is in E. It can be used as an intro or anywhere else when you’re on the I chord. I use open strings, a rake and a bend with a ringin’ high E string on top of it.
