Watch the Shoot Shoot! online guitar lesson by Richard Van Bergen from 50 Down Home Blues Licks You MUST Know

John Lee Hooker is arguably the boogie master. We’ll be focusing on him for the next four licks. Hooker was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi in 1917. Like a lot of his fellow bluesmen he moved up north and recorded his first sides for the Modern label in 1948 in Detroit. In Hooker’s boogies there are hardly any chord changes. A big part of Hooker’s groove was his foot stomping. This lick is the instrumental intro of one of his greatest hits: Boom Boom. I'll also show you the guitar part that acts as a call and response to the vocals. We’re in the key of E and use a lot of open strings.
