Watch the Furry goes to Brownville online guitar lesson by Richard Van Bergen from 50 Down Home Blues Licks You MUST Know

Here is another lick in open G tuning. This time without the capo. It is based on Furry Lewis’ version of the song 'I’m Goin’ To Brownville'. Furry Lewis was born in Greenwood, Mississippi in 1893. In 1927 he recorded for Vocalion in Chicago. He lived in Memphis for the major part of his life. In the 60's old time bluesmen like Son House, Skip James and Bukka White were rediscovered. Furry Lewis was one of them too. He recorded and performed again until his death in 1981. This lick is a fine example of the slide playing the melody. Many bluesmen did this, sometimes in unison with the vocals. I’ll also show you how to play the instrumental hook Lewis plays.
