Watch the On the Up and Up online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from 50 Blues Rock Guitar Licks You MUST Know

Rhythmic displacement is a fancy way of saying don't start on a down beat. I learned this idea from my friend and spectacular guitar player Pat Bergeson. Then I realized that just about every other great guitar player would do it. Here is a simple exercise, take a lick you know well and start it on an up beat. Really listen to how it changes the feel of the lick over all. It can add a forward motion to the lick that can really make the simplest of licks sound fresh and cool.
