Watch the Octave Slide online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from 50 Blues Guitar Licks You MUST Know
Jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery is the true innovator of the use of octaves in soloing. Hendrix famously used them for the melody in “Third Stone From The Sun” and Stevie Ray Vaughn used them on his version of the Kenny Burrell classic “Chitlins Con Carne”. Sliding the octaves can be a bit tricky but worth the effort, because they add another dimension to your playing. The trick is to make sure you mute the rest of the strings or things could get ugly. For full on Wes effect put down the pick and use your thumb for a great thick warm sound.
