Here's a cool one for you that mixes major and minor pentatonic scales that outline the quick IV7 to I7 change on bars 2 and 3 of a blues. We're going to use the C note from Am pentatonic (ACDEG) and the F# from A major pentatonic (ABC#EF#) to grab the tritone of the D7 chord (DF#AC). There are a number of ways to look at this mixture of notes: We can see them coming from D Mixolydian, which would be true, but that can get complicated. Instead, I look at it as mixing the two scales and using the right note at the right time. If we mix the A major and A minor pentatonic scales into one scale, we get the composite blues scale A-B-C-C#-D-Eb-E-F#-G. That's a great scale, but again, it can be a bit complicated. Start by visualizing the major and minor pentatonic scales on top of each other in one position at a time.
