Watch the Feel The Rub! online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from 30 Smokin' Blues-Rock Guitar Licks You MUST Know

"Feel The Rub!" plays up the natural overtones we get on the guitar that really jump out when using overdrive or distortion. As we know, sound travels in waves, so the string vibrates in waves as well. A fun thing to do is to hold your guitar up to a TV screen and pluck a string. You can actually see the wave created by the string vibrating.

In this lick, we are up taking a unison bend and slowly releasing it to take advantage of dissonance between the two notes. You can actually hear the waves fighting against each other, it's pretty awesome. I follow the scale down through E Dorian where I release the tension by playing a perfect fourth on the 12th fret of the top two strings. Albert King used this kind of overtone lick quite a bit. You can hear Stevie Ray Vaughan do the same thing.
