Watch the Open E's online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from 30 Smokin' Blues-Rock Guitar Licks You MUST Know
Here's another fun one. They're ALL fun, OK?br>
Open string licks are a huge part of guitar playing mainly because we have open strings to play with! They have a distinctive timbre to them and they allow us to play some pretty ripping licks without fretting every note. SRV was a master of these licks with tunes like "Scuttle Buttin'". That one still kicks my butt and I highly suggest checking it out. But these licks are part of standard guitar vocabulary, and are a complete must-know technique.
This lick is a bit tricky, but a cool place to start is learning a blues classic like "Catfish Blues" or otherwise known as "Rolling Stone Blues" by Muddy Waters. Jimi calls it "Catfish Blues" on his Blues record. Same idea. Now go learn it.
