Watch the Red Rooster online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from 30 Authentic Blues Grooves You MUST Know

Little Red Rooster has been a blues and rock and roll classic since it was first performed. Like many blues classics its lyrical origins are many. Many of the lyrics, subjects, and themes can be found in many, many songs. Red Rooster is one of them, this tune has its roots in the Mississippi delta. The version we are looking at is by Howlin' Wolf, this is also the version that the Stones covered in their early days. Actually they still play this one quite a bit. We are in open G on this one using the slide. Wolf plays it in open A but the tunings are the same just a whole step apart.
