Watch the Downward online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from 30 Authentic Blues Grooves You MUST Know
We have heard this riff or something similar to it on Freddie Kings "Going Down" which is now a rock and roll jam classic. I wanted to show how we can take a riff and re-purpose it like so many of the originators of the blues did. As we see throughout this course many themes are repeated. Honestly that's what makes it the blues. There is something very important to remember, when Muddy, Lightning, John Lee, Little Walter, and the blues legends recorded this stuff IT HAD NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE! I sometimes lose sight of that fact growing up listening to post Zep rock and roll. When Zeppelin stole these tunes (they settled out of court) it was second generation. So what may sound cliché now was new stuff in 1954. The blues didn't go electric until then.
