Watch the 30 Bluegrass Runs online guitar lesson by Stephen Mougin from 30 Bluegrass Runs You MUST Know

Like most things in life, too much of a good thing is too much. Runs need to be used with taste and purpose, and therefore, not on every chord change. Spend some quality time with each of the G runs and make sure you really have them down. They are the exception to the rule and can be used several times in the same song. To keep it interesting, it's helpful to have a variety of G runs in your back pocket. (Picker TIP: give a listen to several of your favorite bluegrass bands and see what the guitar player is doing. How often do they use runs? How many runs per song? When do they choose to play them?)
