Watch the Strumming & Accents online guitar lesson by Rich Maloof from Acoustic Guitar For Beginners
By syncopating or accenting strums, you can change the feel of your rhythms. You'll not only increase the number of different strums available, but your music will have more energy and movement.
In an earlier clip (see Lesson 8 video2 on CD 1), we placed accents on the first beat of each measure, then on the 1st and 3rd downbeats. Now we're taking the idea a step further by using accents on 8th-note strums. Once you can control accents on upbeats or downbeats, you can strum any song.
A great way to learn new rhythmic feels is to listen to songs that have strumming parts, and figure out where the accents are. Most of the time, the rhythmic pattern of strums and accents will repeat within a song's verse or a chorus.
