Watch the Lick Study 9 online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Beginner Blues-Rock Soloing
This one incorporates a cool repeated pattern that is essential for every guitar player to know. I call the first part the Skynyrd lick, as we hear it repeatedly at the end of "Freebird". The picking on this one is extremely important to get up to speed. Notice how I start on a down pick and then I use two up picks in a row. This is often called economy picking or sweep picking. I prefer the term economy simply because it is the most economical and efficient way to play this idea. The term sweep picking always reminds me of big neoclassical arpeggios played at top speed by all the Yngwie protégés.
