Watch the Legato Exercise 2 online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Beginner Blues-Rock Soloing
In our second legato exercise, we're going to expand upon the lick we learned in the first exercise. Legato is important as it not only helps increase our speed but also smooths out our playing. The definition of legato is "a smooth flowing manner". When we speak, our voices are legato more often than staccato. When we speak, we do not enunciate each word as it sounds odd and uncomfortable. The exact same holds true for music. If you were to pick every single note, you would end up sounding a bit like a typewriter. Do typewriters still exist? Anyway, don't sound like one!
