Watch the Pentatonic Picking Exercise 4 online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Beginner Blues-Rock Soloing

Well here it is! The classic introduction to an Eric Johnson lick. You hear Joe Bonamassa play this lick a fair amount and he often cites Eric Johnson as an influence. This pattern introduces the rhythmic phrase called sixes, which is basically six notes in one beat. The lick should have a nice flow to it, similar to a waltz. Sixes can be seen as two groups of three on one beat.

As you would do with all these exercises, take it through the rest of the pentatonic scale fingerings. Do that away from the metronome so you can start to get a feel for the patterns. Really what we're working on here is mostly muscle memory; we are no different from athletes in that sense. The main difference is that we can sit on the couch and do this! The more you practice it methodically, the better you will get at it.
