Watch the Lick Study 3 online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Beginner Blues-Rock Soloing

The lick uses a technique that I discuss in every one of my courses here at TrueFire: tweaking the flatted third of your minor pentatonic scale. Almost without exception, you want to bend that note ever so slightly as you move away from it.

In this case, the key of D minor, the flatted third is the note F. As you can see in the demonstration of the lick, I am ever so slightly bending that note with my first finger. I can't stress enough the importance of this maneuver. It's so important, that when I hear people not do it, I notice it immediately. It just sounds wrong! If you want to learn more about this, please check out my Blues Guitar Survival Guide: Lead Edition for much more detail.
