Watch the Bends & Vibrato Exercise 3 online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Beginner Blues-Rock Soloing

Let's talk about string gauges. I use a basic 10 through 46 set, as many electric guitar players do. String gauge selection has many factors, but for me it's mostly playability. I'm not a particularly big guy, and I've tried 11 gauge strings, but I find them just too difficult to deal with on the higher strings. I love the way they feel on my pick hand though.

Generally, I would recommend 9's or 10's to most players, certainly leaning towards 10's. As some of you may know, I'm a big fan of Billy Gibbons (cheap plug, I have a how to play in the style of Billy Gibbons course here at TrueFire) and he uses 7's and has a huge tone, but personally I find these too hard to control!
