Watch the Embellishing online guitar lesson by Joe Dalton from Acoustic Blues Handbook
Embellish- to make something more attractive by the addition of decorative details or features (Oxford American Dictionary). Musically, embellishing usually means to add notes that make something more complex and, of course, more attractive, etc. We will be embellishing the harmonized patterns with hammer-ons and slides, and eventually additional notes. After you master these, you may find other notes and rhythmic changes including anticipations or hesitations to embellish the pattern in your own way. Remember that these patterns and the embellishments are all modular, so you can mix and match at your own discretion. Try not to use too many one after the other, as this can confuse the listener by making the phrasing difficult to follow.
