Watch the Long Distance Turnaround online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from 30 Beginner Slide Blues Guitar Licks You MUST Know
One of Muddy Waters' classic and most loved tunes is "Long Distance Call", for which he plays an iconic opening figure during the song's intro.
This lick is played along those lines. As an opening figure the phrase is four bars long, representing what would be the last four bars of a 12-bar progression since it includes a turnaround (from the I chord to the V chord) in the in the final two bars. Pay close attention to the vibratos that are executed throughout this lick, and, as always, strive for true intonation and clean, distinct-sounding notes, without letting any of the strings "ring into" each other.
