Watch the Pickin' The Sauce online guitar lesson by TrueFire from Play Bass Guitar 4: Groove Vocabulary

Pickin' The Sauce - Lick #16 is a video guitar lesson presented by Freekbass and is sourced from 50 Freekbass Licks You MUST Know.

With this lick (using an E minor pentatonic scale) I am using what I call a hard-mute technique. Once you grab all of the notes I am doing, with your left/neck hand, you are not fully pressing down on the note. This creates an almost dampened, or intense staccato note. Almost like when you stab a note on a clavinet or keyboard.

Basically, you play the run with your hand not pressing the note at all on your neck, but still playing or fingering your right hand just as strong as if you were playing something heavy. Gradually increase the amount of pressure you are applying to the neck until the note just begins to pop out.

This is also very good for breakdowns live, when you want to bring down the volume onstage, but not lose the punch.
