Watch the Changing Keys & Rhythms online guitar lesson by Stu Hamm from Learn Bass 1: First Steps for Beginners
Now that you're comfortable with the basic blues pattern, let's make it more interesting by changing keys and changing rhythms. With this hand position, all we have to do is go up one fret to change keys to Bb. And you can do this with any position on the neck - as long as you keep your hand in the same playing position, the I, IV, and V are in the same spot no matter where you move.
Another way to change things up is by varying the rhythm. Now, as we play our blues in Bb, we'll make the first bar of each note half notes through the whole progression. On the second chorus, we'll play one half note and two quarter notes for each note. Then, for the third chorus, we'll play four quarter notes for each bar.
