Watch the 2 Beat online guitar lesson by Andrew Ford from Blues Bass Survival Guide
The two beat groove or two feel in blues is normally used in up tempo songs like jump blues. The time signature that two beat grooves are often written in is 2/2 or cut time. In its most basic form it consists of 2 half notes per measure playing the root and going up to the 5 or down to the 5, examples 1 and 2 demonstrate this. There are of course many variations to this basic pattern. Although cut time and 4/4 time have the same amount of beats, cut time is felt as 1, 2, 1, 2 instead 1, 2, 3, 4. Try to think more like an upright bass or tuba when playing this feel at fast tempos. Also, get bouncier feel by not giving the half notes their full value like in example 3.
