Watch the 12/8 Feel online guitar lesson by Andrew Ford from Blues Bass Survival Guide
These are slower blues that can be counted in 12/8 time but sometimes are written as a slow 4/4 time or even 6/8. The purpose for notation, in most cases, is to give you a guide, to assist you in finding the right notes and feel for the music. All three of these examples are exactly the same feel and notes but written in different time signatures. They all demonstrate the 12/8 feel. The audience, producer, artist or fellow band member doesn't care how you count it, only that you play it correctly. That is why many musicians have a very successful career without reading a note of notation, it is all about getting the right feel, right away. Now is that an excuse to not learn how to read music?, no, I believe reading music is extremely valuable, but the ultimate factor is how it feels. Let's internalize this 12/8 feel.
