Watch the Straight 8th R&B Feel online guitar lesson by Andrew Ford from Blues Bass Survival Guide
The title of this groove has more to do with the drummers feel than anything else. It is characterized by the straight eighth note high hat pattern and back beat. When finding the right blues bass patterns to go along with this groove we need to hone in on that 8th note high hat pattern and maybe find combinations of 8th notes mixed with space that locks in with the drums and leaves space for the vocal and other rhythm instruments. The feel of this groove is laid back and funky. These 3 patterns, all played over an A7 chord uses different combinations of 8th notes, space, syncopations and slurs to create bass lines that are in the pocket but make a statement.
