Watch the Connecting the Dots online guitar lesson by Andrew Ford from Blues Bass Survival Guide

Next let's look at what I think is one of the most important components of a strong blues bass line, it is something I call connecting the dots. Connecting the dots is what I refer to as the process of using patterns, motifs, or notes in your bass line to connect the chords together in a musical way. It is a bass player's chance to be a little melodic while creating a sense of anticipation, expectation, or tension and release for the listener. Many times it involves walking up or walking down to the new chord change in a way that propels the song and lets everybody know something new is about to happen. Other times it may just be a chromatic leading note that creates that transition. Here are a few common ways you might connect the dots in your own blues bass lines.
