There was a time in my life when I was an “anti-pick ”snob. I’m not sure why. My first real Bass Hero Chris Squire used a pick and when I was starting out I copied as many of his licks as I could. I guess that for a while I felt that using a pick made it more of a bass guitar than a bass…whatever. Using a pick allows to you to add even more sounds and feels to your repertoire, and why limit yourself? Some amazing bass players get great sounds using plectrums and in this section I’ll demonstrate down picking, up and down pick strokes and talk about muting with the heel of your picking hand to dampen the strings and get a tighter sound.
