Watch the Shuffle Feel online guitar lesson by Stu Hamm from Stu Hamm U: Bass Basics
Do the shuffle! Here we learn the difference between a straight groove and a syncopated one, which can be called “Shuffle” or “Swing” feel. A straight feel is based on subdividing the beat into 1/4 or 1/8th notes. Whereas the shuffle and swing feels are based on subdividing the beat into triplets. When you tie the first two notes of a triplet figure together and play them as one note and then play the remaining note you will hear the difference.
We’ll play exercise #1 in the key of G, which will also help you get comfortable with reading charts in which only the number of the chord to play is given, as opposed to actually naming the chords.
