Watch the Pop Tune with a Chart online guitar lesson by Stu Hamm from Stu Hamm U: Bass Basics

Here comes a real world exercise for you! We are going to be playing example #3 with a Pop Ballad feel. I’ll let you see and hear how a good, simple and supportive Bass Line works and how to spice it up (when appropriate of course). I’ll discuss “Leading” or “Telegraphing into the next chord, which will alert the listener that a musical change is coming by approaching the upcoming chord with some motion. You will be introduced to a vamp (not Theda Berra) which is a commonly used term for a musical phrase to be repeated until the singer or leader gives the signal that it’s time to move on. We’ll also discuss “Tag Endings”, which is a very commonly used way to end a song.
